What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is all about you. I work with you to help break down barriers which prevent you from completing everyday tasks, so you can live a fulfilling independent life.

Treating each client and situation holistically, I consider the physical impact of tasks, caused by injury, illness or ageing, the environmental factors, community factors and the psycho-social aspects that impact functional ability.

Through a consultation process I will establish what these barriers are and how they can be addressed so you can achieve what you need and would like.  The consultation may include

An OT will try to find out why you cannot do what you would like or need to do and, depending on your situation, an OT may assess the following areas:

  • What you can and cannot do physically e.g. activities that require balance, coordination and strength.

  • What you can and cannot do mentally e.g. activities that require you to be organised, use your memory, managing your mood, and have coping strategies.

  • What equipment you need to participate in the occupation e.g. furniture, grab rails, cooking utensils, clothes or assistive technology.

  • The environment where the difficulties happen such as work, home, or out in the community

  • The emotional and social support that is available to you in your environment.

Society of Occupational Medicine visit to the Houses of Parliament to meet their Occupational Health team 2024

My personal experience

In 2014 I had a simple knee surgery but never fully regained my mobility and needed to use a wheelchair or hop around on crutches. I was seen by 16 health professionals who were baffled by my symptoms but was ultimately diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, a rare and painful neurological condition.

There was nothing that did not change in my life because of this diagnosis.

In the following years I attended the two main specialist treatments centres for this condition in the UK and had multiple Physio Therapist and Occupational Therapist and Medics involved in my care. Through following the recommended techniques I re-learnt to walk short distances but my life was still quite affected by disability.

I decided to seek treatment abroad in 2022 and had scrambler therapy in Italy, this helped me to regain more control over my CRPS which has enabled me to dedicate more time to my passion which is Occupational Therapy and helping others.

I believe I am now a better Occupational Therapist because of my experiences as I know what it is like to need adaptions to my home, wheelchairs (manual and powered) and have my independence taken away from me and the impact this had on my own quality of life.
